I don’t know if Brando’s cutting back on selling weird gadgets, but it’s good to know that they’re still coming out with cheap and practical ones. This one’s a 3-in-1 device, a 4-port USB hub/charger that can also be used as a solar-powered charger and a flashlight.

One Step Closer To Interactive Television

In the late 80’s I remember seeing many television concepts designed to engage the user. Remember Smell-O-Vision? Designers recognized interactivity was the future but they couldn’t foresee the advanced software and hardware solutions we have today. Check out MetaMirror, a concept software platform that enables you to access content relative to the show you’re watching. Almost everything today has secondary content and this is a much more elegant solution than sitting in front of a computer.

The Solar Bike Fujin was recently launched by Hama Zero. This Japanese company came up with this electric bike that features solar panel at the back. It’s a green bike alright because you only need to store power from the Sun but who want’s to ride a bike that looks like it has wings?

Solar Bike Fujin can reach 72km/h as top speed and can travel for up to 220km on a single charge as described. This bike can also be charged from any power socket.

Twilight Umbrella makes you look like a fallen star

Twilight Umbrella

I used to collect pretty umbrellas when I was younger but then I realized I was just wasting time and money. I gave them away and was left with just a few that I use whenever it’s hot or raining. They’re nothing too special unlike this Twilight Umbrella which I find very geeky with all fibre optic lights that come with it.

This umbrella will make you the center of attention especially at night when you’re walking down the street and it’s raining. The lights look like stars in the sky so the umbrella is a delight to look at.

Twilight Umbrella is powered by three AAA batteries. Price tag reads $39.

Origami Yourself A Colorful OLED Light

Fold up the hinged, colorful OLED triangles into the shape of your choosing to illuminate your desk or bedroom. Check out the video to watch them in action... Just a couple more folds and I think they'd have a crane...

The lights are called Triangle Light Objects (or Transparent Light Origami) and were created by Emory Krall. [Inhabitat]

The Living Kitchen Project Imagines A Gesture-Based Future

The Living Kitchen Project Imagines A Gesture-Based Future Could Claytronics make the simple act of preparing a meal as interactive and engaging as a video game? Michaël Harboun explores the future of everyday objects with the Living Kitchen Project.

Claytronics is a technology concept that relies on nano-sized computers that can join together to form interactive 3D objects. Imagine walking up to a blank wall, tracing a rectangle, and having the microscopic computers making up the surface rearrange themselves into a functional TV monitor.

Michaël Harboun, a design student at Strate Collège, created the Living Kitchen Project to help envision a world where everyday objects have been replaced with that technology. Where the objects we clutter our kitchens with are reduced to simple surfaces manipulated via hand gestures.

"Now let's imagine a world where physical objects would gain digital abilities, meaning you could change the shape of any object as you would change the contents of your smartphone," Harboun says. "This would revolutionize our relationship with objects. An object would no longer induce a function by the way it looks. The user himself would define the functions of an object, the user becomes creator."

While such technology seems distant and alien, extreme research into the field is currently being conducted at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While the Living Kitchen is still a long ways off, the foundation is being built.

Being a design student, Harboun finished his presentation with a statement about how the role of the designer would change once all of that kitchen clutter becomes obsolete.

"The designer would still keep his position as a guarantor of quality. He would create sophisticated shapes in order to propose the best usages possible for his customer's needs. But he would also play an important role in the way the user interacts with the object. Designing the matter's behavior will perhaps be a new challenge for tomorrow's designers."

in japan, the wheelchairs follow you

Ordinary wheelchairs require considerable effort from the person on them in order to move, unless of course someone pushes the wheelchair. However, in Japan (and probably other countries as well), some care facilities don’t have enough staff to accommodate the wheelchair-bound. That’s why researchers at Saitama University came up with a robot wheelchair that doesn’t need a person behind it to push – what it needs is someone in front of or beside it.

Basically, the wheelchair tracks the shoulder of the person in front of it. This allows it to change speed as well as direction so that it’s always beside or slightly behind the person it’s following. The wheelchair can also detect if it’s in a cramped area, and if so, will move behind the person so as not to bump into the crowd.

It’s a very practical idea, but I think it would be more practical if the wheelchair relied on a map or GPS instead. That way even if there’s no one to accompany the wheelchair-bound, they’ll still be able to move around.
