HP dabbling with Windows 7 tablet computer

SAN FRANCISCO, USA (AFP) – Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday said it is gauging the promise of a tablet computer that runs on Windows 7 software from Microsoft.

The word from the US-based computer giant came as speculation mounted that HP had abandoned a Windows 7 "slate" in favor of a tablet computer based on an operating system from freshly-acquired Palm.

"In reference to a Windows 7-based slate, we are in customer evaluations now and will make a determination soon on the next step," HP spokeswoman Marlene Somsak told AFP.

Customer evaluations could involve providing a prototype HP slate to businesses to get feedback and learn how they might use it.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said last week that the technology titan is teaming up with nearly two dozen hardware makers to release Windows-based tablet computers, devices like Apple's popular iPad.

"This year one of the most important things that we will do in the smart device category is really push forward with Windows 7-based slates and Windows 7 phones," Ballmer said.

The list of potential Windows 7-based slate partners given by Ballmer included HP, Lenovo, Asus, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony.

Apple has sold more than three million iPads since it went on sale in April and Microsoft and other technology giants have been seeking to develop products to rival the touchscreen device from the California gadget maker.

Microsoft in April sidelined a "Courier" project said to be focused on building a twin-screen tablet computer that could be used for entertainment and work.

That same month, HP made a deal to buy struggling US mobile phone maker Palm for 1.2 billion dollars in a bid to become a player in the fast-growing smartphone market.

HP executive vice president Todd Bradley said at the time that the widely praised Palm webOS mobile operating system would allow HP to expand "our breadth of products" from smartphones to netbooks to "slate," or tablet, computers.

Archos 8 Home Tablet gets unboxed and examined

We've already gotten our hands on the Archos 7 Home Tablet, but the Archos 8 has been considerably harder to come by, and hasn't made much of a public showing since a brief appearance courtesy of the FCC back in May. The folks at Archos Lounge have now gotten their hands on the bezel tablet, however, and given us our first real look at the device. As you can probably tell from the form factor, this one is primarily designed to be used propped up on a table or a desk, but you can fold away the kickstand and do a bit of bezel-enhanced web browsing if you like. Head on past the break for Archos Lounge's video of both tablets -- en français, of course -- and look for the Archos 8 around the 11:20 mark.

平板電腦要普及:低價/量大/開放性軟體架構 不可缺少,而印度與中國...等金磚四國是廣大市場.$35低價平板電腦如此產生.

India unveils prototype of $35 tablet computer

MUMBAI, India – It looks like an iPad, only it's 1/14th the cost: India has unveiled the prototype of a $35 basic touchscreen tablet aimed at students, which it hopes to bring into production by 2011.

If the government can find a manufacturer, the Linux operating system-based computer would be the latest in a string of "world's cheapest" innovations to hit the market out of India, which is home to the 100,000 rupee ($2,127) compact Nano car, the 749 rupees ($16) water purifier and the $2,000 open-heart surgery.

The tablet can be used for functions like word processing, web browsing and video-conferencing. It has a solar power option too — important for India's energy-starved hinterlands — though that add-on costs extra.

"This is our answer to MIT's $100 computer," human resource development minister Kapil Sibal told the Economic Times when he unveiled the device Thursday.

In 2005, Nicholas Negroponte — co-founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab — unveiled a prototype of a $100 laptop for children in the developing world. India rejected that as too expensive and embarked on a multiyear effort to develop a cheaper option of its own.

Negroponte's laptop ended up costing about $200, but in May his nonprofit association, One Laptop Per Child, said it plans to launch a basic tablet computer for $99.

Sibal turned to students and professors at India's elite technical universities to develop the $35 tablet after receiving a "lukewarm" response from private sector players. He hopes to get the cost down to $10 eventually.

Mamta Varma, a ministry spokeswoman, said falling hardware costs and intelligent design make the price tag plausible. The tablet doesn't have a hard disk, but instead uses a memory card, much like a mobile phone. The tablet design cuts hardware costs, and the use of open-source software also adds to savings, she said.

Varma said several global manufacturers, including at least one from Taiwan, have shown interest in making the low-cost device, but no manufacturing or distribution deals have been finalized. She declined to name any of the companies.

India plans to subsidize the cost of the tablet for its students, bringing the purchase price down to around $20.

"Depending on the quality of material they are using, certainly it's plausible," said Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at Forrester Research. "The question is, is it good enough for students?"

Profitability is also a question for the $35 machine.

Epps said government subsidies or dual marketing — where higher-priced sales in the developed world are used to subside low-cost sales in markets like India — could convince a manufacturer to come on board.

This and similar efforts — like the Kakai Kno and the Entourage Edge tablets — show that there is global demand for an affordable device to trim high textbook costs, she said.

If it works, Epps predicts the device could send a shiver of cost-consciousness through the industry.

"It puts pressure on all device manufacturers to keep costs down and innovate," she said.

The project is part of an ambitious education technology initiative by the Indian government, which also aims to bring broadband connectivity to India's 25,000 colleges and 504 universities and make study materials available online.

So far nearly 8,500 colleges have been connected and nearly 500 web and video-based courses have been uploaded on YouTube and other portals, the Ministry said.

Fossil's Faux-Vintage iPad Case

Fossil's Faux-Vintage iPad CaseFossil's watches always break on me, but there's one thing the company does well: rip off popular aesthetics at a wallet-friendly price. And their new Becket iPad case is a perfect example of this mass market design philosophy.

A leather exterior, a synthetic suede interior, and what looks like an elastic band (possibly from a ponytail holder overstock) to hold it all together—it's everything you need from a pretentious iPad case if you aren't willing to simply shop for the real vintage alternatives in the first place.

I just wish the Fossil logo were a bit smaller. No one will ever believe I picked this up from an Italian artisan. $40. [Fossil via notcot]

HyperMac iPad Stand Charges While You Watch

HyperMac iPad Stand Charges While You Watch

Those looking to minimize desk clutter will be pleased with HyperMac's entrant to the iPad stand rodeo, offering a built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery for 16 hours of extra life.

The HyperMac stand has two slots at 18 and 45 degree angles, each providing what purports to be superior viewing for movies and reading, respectively—and you can even stick your iPad in while clothed in Apple's official case. HyperMac, whose quality wares we've covered before, claims the 12.7 ounce stand is pocketable as well, though we're not sure how the "No, listen, that was just an iPad stand in my pocket" defense will work after an awkward hug. iMac iPad Stand

iMac iPad Stand

It's $50. But in an age when Apple was just selling fanboys Livestrong bracelets for $30, I don't think we can complain about that point too much.

Have you tried Air Display yet? It's wonderful. The only real flaw with the app is something you realize about 1 minute into its use: You're gonna need a stand to use your iPad as a second monitor.

Innopocket's HexaPose stand completely obliterates that issue with utter design overkill.

Their solid aluminum and polycarbonate stand mimics the iMac right down to the hole for cords, all while supporting portrait and landscape configurations with three angles of tilt apiece. The company hasn't listed a weight, but the HexaPose looks solid and poised—plenty to anchor your iPad on your desk with prominence and security.

I don't know much about Innopocket's products, but assuming the build quality is up to snuff, this could be one excessive accessory purchase worthy of excessive accessory purchases. [Innopocket and Pyramid Distribution via Geeky Gadgets]

Augen's $150 Android tablet hits Kmart circular, coming to stores later this week

We can't say we've heard of Augen before, but the company certainly sparked our interest (and that of Kmart circular readers) this weekend with its $149.99 7-inch Android tablet. Oh yes, you heard right shoppers -- the small Florida-based shop is bringing an Android 2.1 tablet with WiFi, 2GB of storage and 256MB of RAM to a store near you for just 150 buckaroos. And according to an Augen spokesperson, it will have access to the Android "Market App Store." That sounds pretty awesome for the pricetag, but we -- along with a number of readers we've heard from -- haven't been able to locate the 7-inch tablet at any Kmart retail location just yet. (Yes, we even spent a lovely ten minutes on hold with our local store while they checked the inventory.) We're told by Augen that the device should be hitting shelves later this week, though the company was unsure it would ever land on Kmart's online store. In addition to the 7-inch tablet, Augen has also released its $89 TheBook e-reader with a similar 7-inch LCD. It doesn't run Android, but you can check out an in-depth look at its Linux OS in The eReader's video review after the break. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground on the availability of the tablet and will be trying to get one in our hands to confirm the preloaded Market, but let us know in the comments if you've had any luck yourselves.

[Thanks, Matthew]

The iPad goes to college this fall

Some colleges and universities are looking to adopt the iPad as a collaborative tool.
Some colleges and universities are looking to adopt the iPad as a collaborative tool.

(ArsTechnica) -- The iPad is about to have its academic chops put to the test this fall in a number of programs around the country.

Colleges and universities are looking to adopt the iPad as a collaborative tool, a standardized mobile device to integrate into curriculums, and, in some cases, even a cost-saving device.

Oklahoma State University plans to begin a pilot iPad program this fall, with students in certain courses offered by the School of Media and Strategic Communications and the Spears School of Business receiving iPads to use with those courses.

The program will be used to determine how effective iPads can be as tools to enhance learning as well as how such mobile devices can be integrated into the workplace.

"This limited pilot will be focused on fields of study where we believe we can best determine the higher education value of the iPad," Bill Handy, visiting assistant professor in OSU's School of Media and Strategic Communications, told Macsimum News.

"We will evaluate the academic enhancement to the courses, how the iPad and its specific apps and web-based tools can be integrated in this capacity, and perhaps most importantly, how the integration of these mobile tools can expand the tactical abilities of students as they enter the workforce."

Though an iPad starts at $499 and can cost as much as $829 for the top-end model, there is potential for cost savings as well. The university has already identified one class where the textbook in ePub format costs $100 less than the dead-tree version.

With a typical class load of five courses, it could be possible to completely offset the cost of a device like an iPad in textbook savings alone. (At least, this is true if you're comparing the iPad against a stack of brand new textbooks; the savings may disappear if used books are brought into the comparison.)

The Illinois Institute of Technology has even more ambitious plans to integrate iPads into academics. A technology initiative will give all incoming freshman undergraduates -- about 550 students -- an iPad to use as a technological enhancement to the curriculum. Because all freshman are required to take several introductory courses, such as "Introduction to the Professions," software, e-texts, and other resources will be uniform for those courses.

"We can ensure everyone has the same hardware and software, and it makes it easier to integrate into the curriculum," Evan Venie, associate director of media relations for IIT, told Ars. "But we also want to open it up to other faculty that want to integrate iPad support into their courses -- most of the faculty are very interested in leveraging the potential the iPad offers in the academic environment."

The Kindle already underwent similar pilot testing at seven universities last fall, as many schools are interested in replacing textbooks and mounds of printouts of journal articles and other assigned readings with eReaders. Amazon provided Kindle DXs to Arizona State University, Case Western Reserve University, Pace University, Princeton University, Reed College, the University of Washington, and Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia for the evaluation program.

Though students were very receptive to participating in the tests, both faculty and students found numerous technological hurdles that in the end outweighed the potential benefits. Students at Reed College complained of the slow refresh rate of e-Ink displays, problematic input, inability to load PDFs over the network, and inability to view more than one text at a time as major sticking points. Reed faculty found converting documents to work well on the Kindle to be particularly difficult in most cases.

Students participating in the test at Darden School of Business, while loving the Kindle for personal reading, overwhelmingly felt the Kindle didn't pass muster in its current state for academic use -- about 4 out of 5 would not recommend a Kindle DX to incoming MBA students.

The test also faced a lawsuit from the National Federation of the Blind and the American Council of the Blind over the Kindle's lack of accessibility features, though Amazon has pledged to address that shortcoming sometime this year.

Despite the disappointing results of the tests with the Kindle DX, schools have high hopes for the iPad. OSU and IIT aren't alone in exploring ways to use an iPad to enhance education -- other programs around the country include:

Seton Hill University's"An iPad for Everyone" is part of the university's Griffin Technology Advantage Program. Announced just as the first iPads were beginning to ship, the program will put an iPad in the hands of every full-time student starting this fall.

Students at George Fox University, which has given a MacBook to incoming freshman for several years, will now offer students a choice between a MacBook or an iPad. "With this, we're basically asking students 'What computing system will work best for you?'" the university's chief information officer, Greg Smith, said at the time the program was announced.

North Carolina State University Libraries announced this past spring that it acquired 30 iPads to offer students and faculty for four-hour loans as part of the school's Technology Lending Service. That service offers a variety of devices for loan to students, including laptops, digital cameras, eBook readers, graphing calculators, and more.

In addition to browsing the web and "evaluating whether this latest platform is something you want to invest in for the future," the iPads can be used to read some of the 9,000 eBooks NC State recently acquired.

Students in a master's course in global health research at Duke University's Global Health Institute will be given iPads to use for field work. "Our primary goal is to equip our students with a toolset that allows them to make the most of their time in the field," said Associate Professor of Sociology Jen'nan Read, who will be teaching the class. The students will have models with 3G networking as well as pre-installed apps for collecting data, importing media files, and graphing results.

The University of Maryland will be giving 75 honors students enrolled in the Digital Cultures and Creativity "living and learning program" an iPad this fall. Students will use the iPads for pulling down multimedia content related to their coursework, and will also be developing their own apps for the device. The iPad program is part of a larger Mobility Initiative designed to integrate mobile devices into the curriculum at UM.

Reed College will repeat an experiment that tested student preference of textbooks loaded on a Kindle versus traditional paper textbooks this fall, this time using iPads. Students in the previous experiment preferred the dead-tree edition to using a Kindle DX, despite the obvious advantage of not hauling heavy books all over campus. Expectations are that the iPad will fare better with students than the Kindle did.

"If I were to predict, I would say that the results are going to be dramatically different and much better," Martin D. Ringle, chief technology officer at Reed College, told The Chronicle of Higher Education, "and they're going to point the way to what role this technology is going to play in higher education."

The iPad can certainly address the speed and input issues that students complained about and offers accessibility features for vision-impaired users. However, the device may suffer from similar problems with loading documents over the air and viewing more than one text at a time.

But by combining its speed with the multitasking capabilities that will come in a fall update to iOS 4, the iPad may still prove to be a workable solution. If it works as well as expected, carrying an iPad would sure beat lugging 40 lbs of books and a laptop all over campus.

People sue Apple over 'overheating' iPads By Chris Foresman, ArsTechnica
July 28, 2010 CNN News

(ArsTechnica) -- Three iPad users claim that because the iPad will shut itself off after remaining in direct sunlight for long enough, it fails to meet the promises Apple made about using the device as an e-book reader.

The group has filed a federal class-action lawsuit in the Northern California district to "redress and end this pattern of unlawful conduct."

When the iPad's operating temperature reaches a critical level, it will force itself to shut down and display a message warning the user to let the device cool down before trying use it again. This warning is the same that iPhones and iPod Touches give before shutting down when they overheat, often after being left in direct sunlight.

The lawsuit alleges that the iPad "does not live up to reasonable consumer's expectations created by Apple insofar as the iPad overheats so quickly under common weather conditions." Apple lists the iPad's operating temperature as 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C), so it's not hard to see that using it out in the hot sun can quickly heat up the device over the maximum temperature.

The plaintiffs seem to take particular issue with Apple claiming that "reading on the iPad is just like reading a book." This claim is patently false, according to the lawsuit, because a real book can be used in "the sunlight or other normal environmental conditions" without shutting off.

Most consumer electronic devices can be damaged from overheating if used in direct sunlight for long periods of time; not all of them have the automatic shutoff capability that the iPad does. (Sadly, my boom box from 1986 didn't have an automatic shutoff, and my Quiet Riot tape melted all over the inside when I left it playing by the pool on a hot summer day.)

However, during my hours-long marathon "Plants vs Zombies" sessions -- both indoors and in the shade of an apartment deck on a sunny, 82° day -- my iPad never became even warm to the touch.

The iPad may not work "just like a book" at the beach or out in the hot sun. Does that fact truly make Apple guilty of fraud, negligent misrepresentation, deceptive advertising, unfair business practices, breach of express or implied warranty, intentional misrepresentation or unjust enrichment?

The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status and asking for an injunction against Apple's "false" promises as well as "real" and punitive damages.
