Zoran will integrate Sensio's 3D decoding technology in their new 3D SoC solutions

Sensio announced today that Zoran will integrate their Hi-Fi 3D decoding technology into new system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions for 3D-capable audiovisual products, including TVs and set-top boxes (STBs).

SENSIO® Hi-Fi 3D is a unique frame-compatible technology for high-fidelity stereoscopic signal processing, easily integrated into display products. Developed by SENSIO more than 10 years ago and deployed in the field for seven years, this mature technology has been trusted by the biggest names in content creation for every commercial live 3D event presented in cinemas around the world, as well as for high-profile console games and DVD movies. This agreement is the sixth signed by SENSIO with major semiconductor manufacturers in the past year.

Japan's NICT created a 200" glasses-free 3D display

Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) create a new projector-system that can be used to produce a 200" glasses-free HD display. NICT uses 64 projectors and collaborated with JVC Kenwood to develop this technology, which also includes a special film and condenser lens in the screen.

NICT now plans to develop an upgraded system that uses 200 projectors... via CrunchGear.

LG confirms Optimus 3D for MWC 2011: glasses-free screen and 3D camera

We've had a feeling that LG was going to tackle 3D smartphones heads-on sometime in February, and after a spat of rumors today purported to be showing off the Optimus 3D (pictured above, via Phandroid), the company's flat-out confirmed its Mobile World Congress debut. The Optimus 3D sports a dual-lens 3D camera, a glasses-free LCD display, and HDMI / DLNA for sharing on whatever 3D sets you have. A live demo will be at Barcelona, but whether that means we'll get to hold it in our own hands. Other specs? We'll have to wait and find out. Press release after the break.

AUO to start shipping glasses-free 3D displays for laptops/monitors in 2011 and expects it to become mainstream soon

AU Optronics (AUO) plans to start shipping glasses-free 3D displays for laptops and monitors in 2011, and the company expects that such technology will become mainstream in 1-2 years.

AUO also estimates that 3D TVs will account for about 6% of the total LCD TV shipments in 2011 (which is expected to be around 215 million TVs - so this means about 13 million 3D TVs).

3net 24/7 3D channel launches this weekend, but only on DirecTV

The number of 24/7 broadcasting 3D channels in the US will go from one to three next week, now that Sony, Imax and Discovery have announced the launch of their channel, 3net, on DirecTV alongside its existing n3D channel and ESPN 3D, which will start looping its sports videos 24/7 on Valentine's Day. Scheduled to go live at 8 p.m. Sunday night on channel 107 it promises fresh debuts all month with a new show added to the rotation every night at 9 p.m. It's big promise is to "offer viewers the largest library of native 3D entertainment content in the world by the end of 2011" although any 3D TV owners who don't have DirecTV would probably just be glad if it got added to their channel lineups anytime soon, check the press release after the break for all the details.

200-Inch Glasses-Free 3D Display: Do I Have a Big Enough Wall?

Bigger screens are the way to go. I just can’t wait to have a screen that’s the size of my whole living room wall. Although this seems like science-fiction, it might not be because NICT has unveiled a 200-inch glasses-free 3D screen that might actually make me want to watch 3D stuff.

NICT’s screen is currently the largest glasses-free display, but big hitters like Sony, Samsung and LG are all working on similar technology. The NICT screen addresses a few issues that plague glasses-free 3D: strip noise, reduction in 3D resolution, and unnatural images due to the observer’s movements. Apparently, the noise between parallax images is caused by uniformity of color and brightness between the images. By adjusting these using power-adjusted LED light sources, and using a special diffuser film and condenser lens, they were able to greatly improve image quality.

For now, the screen can assemble 3D scenes from up to 50 parallax images, but they plan on increasing capacity to 200 images, which will improve viewing angels significantly. I wouldn’t mind having this screen in my pad, although I wonder if I have a wall big enough.

Samsung working on a 4" glasses-free 3D display?

Samsung is said to be working on a new 4" WVGA glasses-free 3D display that can be controlled by moving your phone (Samsung calls this "Motion UI") - for example you can zoom in (or out) by tilting your phone or pan in Google Maps by moving it. It's not clear whether this 3D display is an OLED or an LCD.

It obviously makes sense for Samsung to be working on such a display - Sharp is already shipping such displays and LG has already unveiled their own 4.3" 3D display.

LG Electronics plans to sell 5 million 3D TVs in 2011

LG Electronics says that their plan is to sell 5 million 3D TVs in 2011. It's overall TV sales target is 40 million (about 35M LCDs and 5M plasma TVS) - so 3D TVs will account for 12.5% of all TVs. The company is betting on the passive (polarized) 3D technology, although they're also making active-shutter TVs. LG estimates the total 3D TV market will be 14 million sets - so they aim to grab 35% of the market.

MIT Recompose - an actuated surface that offers gesture controlled 3D display

MIT Media Labs created a new 'actuated surface' called Recompose. It's actually a gesture-controlled 3D display. The system uses the "Relief table" that consists of 120 pins which can change in height - and so they can act as both input and visual output. The system includes a depth camera above for the gesture control. Here's a very cool video explaining it all:
