With wearable devices entering people’s life in 2014, the market size of Internet of Things(IoT) are also rapidly expanding. According to industry estimates, there will be 500 million units networked in 2020, ARM believes that IoT can not only bring new business opportunities but also make work flow more efficient by interconnection of device. And how to be able to achieve closer links of devices, will be the most important strategy of ARM in the networking market.
Kerry McGuire, vice president of ARM IoT strategy division , said that IoT market will go polarization, the products will be dispersed and diverse , and innovative small companies can easily lead to market concerns, such as the most successful fund-raising on kickstarter project Pebble.
According to statistics, there will be more than 50% of new IoT applications are created by small companies in 2018, therefore , ARM will try to accelerate the development of IoT market by integrating software and hardware, and total eco-system to cover more diverse devices and emerging market applications.
Kerry pointed out that the investment of ARM on IoT market is divided into three domains, including Cortex on hardware –level, MBED on software, and SENSINODE on communications.
In terms of hardware, Cortex-M has wide range of applications, from smart phones, wearable devices, home gateways to industrial control; while ARM also acquired Sensinode Oy last year, a IoT software company to provide end to end security of communication, and using NanoService technology to allow different types of devices can be seamlessly linked, for smart city, it can make city more intelligent by allowing a variety of different devices connect to each other.
In addition to the investment on hardware and software, ARM also provides MBED, a IoT developers platform, to help developers can develop prototype in a short time and accelerate time to market. MBED currently is Cortex-M -based development platform, contains many technology from ARM partners.
Kerry said that through the integration of hardware and software, standardized network protocols and development platform that will bring destructive innovation and accelerate the development of the IoT industry.
ARM’s strategy of IoT will toward for three directions: Cortex, MBED, and ENSINODE.
