Why Apple can not use OLEDs in the IPAD-2
There are rumors that the second generation iPad is expected to hit the market first quarter of 2011.
Now the first suppliers goes official, Coretronic will be the main supplier of the second generation iPads Back light units. That means that the iPad hit the market with a LCD Retina Display like the first Ipad from Apple.
Now we can tell you why:
If Apple want to introduce the IPAD-2 in the first quarter 2011, they need millions of OLED panels NOW.
But this is absolute impossible, because the company with 98 percent OLED market share Samsung Mobile Display can not deliver so much panels at this time. In mid 2011 Samsung Mobile Display boost the production with the factor 10 with a new 5.5 gen plant. Also LG-Display build some new OLED panel fabs. Samsung Mobile Display can mass produce only 2-4.2 inch AMOLED or Super-Amoled panels for smartphones (Galaxy-S, Nexus-S, Nokia, Htc etc.) The demand is very high so SMD can not handle all orders for the smartphone market at the moment. At the FPD-International Samsung Mobile Display showcase for the first time a 7 inch AMOLED for the tablet market. But this was only a prototype at the moment, we see this product ready in Q3 2011. So there is no company which can mass produce 7-11 inch panels at the moment. But this problem should be solved in the next few years because: Samsung and LG-Display to invest 17 billion dollars in AM-OLED until 2015
